Feliz 2007 - Happy 2007

Un nuevo año, un nuevo amanecer, nuevos sueños y un nuevo "nosotros" que lucha por ellos. Esta noche comienza el resto de nuestra vida. Feliz 2007.

Graffitis

Últimamente se pueden ver graffitis de enorme calidad en los muros y vallas de Santa Cruz y La Laguna. Ayer me llamaron la atención los de la valla metálica y muro que rodean al Parque Viera y Clavijo. Me pregunto si estos son de los que se "contratan" por el Ayuntamiento o de los que salen de forma espontánea. Me pregunto si los que los hacen son muchos o pocos, qué edad tendrán, de donde serán... El mundo del graffiti sigue (al menos para mi) envuelto en un halo de misterio. ¿Es una forma de arte ilegal (a lo que algunos llamarían vandalismo), o por otro lado es una labor social necesaria la que estos chavales cumplen?. Difícil de decir. Lo que sí que diré es que algunos me encantan.

Hi, Happy Christmas to all Christians out there!! Hope you had a lovely evening and your Christmas Day is nice and peaceful.

The last weeks have been really busy, but in a good sense. People visiting for holidays, dinner parties, etc. I haven't posted anything about it, but in the coming days i'll be updating the blog little by little, so i dont' miss anything important.

The most important visit has been that of Natalie, my dearest friend from Scotland and elder sister, and her boyfriend, Gary, who came for a 1-week sunny break to Tenerife. It had been a long time without catching up, so it was amazing to spend time together and also have the chance to show them around the island. We hiked through the Anaga forests, visited the Teide National Park, strolled along the beautiful walkways of La Laguna, ate gorgeous local fish by the sea shore and so on. We had a great time.

La razón de ser de este blog no es otra que mi marcha inminente de España a Japón. El nombre del blog también tiene que ver con ello. Pero la verdad es que en ningún momento he contado el por qué o el cómo. Así que en los próximos días iré desvelando de qué va todo esto de pirarse al fin del mundo. Eso sí, voy a hacer en varias entregas por que es una historia un pelín larga.

En los últimos 10 años de mi vida he vivido a partes iguales en España y en Reino Unido, principalmente en Escocia. Los últimos 2 años y medio he estado aquí en Tenerife, trabajando, viviendo en familia y aprendiendo un montón de cosas interesantes. Sin embargo, desde que volví de Escocia, nunca he tenido claro que mi destino fuera quedarme a vivir en las islas. La vida aquí es estupenda por el paisaje, el clima y el calor de la gente. Pero dependiendo de en qué círculos te muevas, tvivir aquí puede ser una pasada de interesante o… todo lo contrario. En mi caso ha sido un poco de las dos y como no me queda claro cual ha sido la parte que más ha pesado, no me voy a dar más tiempo para averiguarlo, que ya van dos años y medio, y por eso arranco la caña y que sea lo que dios quiera.

Aunque realmente todo se podría resumir diciendo que tengo ganas de ver el mundo y punto. Por eso “me pica el pie” (que es la traducción literal de “itchy feet”, que en inglés significa, “ser o estar inquieto y querer moverse y ver mundo”). Creo que cualquiera que me conozca sabrá que no se me puede definir mejor.

Así que a pesar de que me va a ser muy duro dejar mi vida aquí y en especial a la gente que más quiero, y aún más en especial a los niños y niñas de los que he estado rodeado sin parar en este tiempo, y entre todos ellos, más que a nadie, al ángel de Adua,… no hay mejor opción que hacer lo que uno sabe que debe hacer y arriesgarse.

Loro Parque

Ayer fuimos unos cuantos de la familia al Loro Parque, una mezcla de parque temático sobre fauna marina, zoológico de toda la vida y jardín botánico. Si bien ver animales encerrados no me hace en absoluto feliz, he de decir que el Loro Parque es simplemente impresionante. Impresionante por su excelente diseño, por su orden y limpieza y por la gente que trabaja dentro, que transmiten muy buena vibra. Yo soy de Tenerife y era la primera vez que lo visitaba. A veces nos resistimos a disfrutar de lo que tenemos más a mano.

They say that Loro Parque is the "must" of Tenerife, and although i hate to see animals living in captivity, i have to admit the Park is really a must. There are really few negative things to say about it, besides the annoying huge crowds that gather on holidays (such as yesterday) and weekends (i guess). Apart from that, the place is amazing, both for kids and grown-ups. The animal shows are so entertaining and well staged, Planet Penguin is just amazing and the gardens covering the whole open areas are so beautiful. All in all, a place worth visiting; the question i keep asking myself is "should places like this exist at all?". Tough one.

Dragon & Mackerel - Drago y Chicharro

I have to admit i'm not a great fan of my home city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There are a few things about it, that, well.. one day i'll talk about it. But one thing is undeniable: it's got some really beautiful hidden spots. And many of them come out mostly at night. This is one of them. The tree in the back is the dragon tree i mentioned in a previous post. A magnificent species, original of this part of the world, that actually is not a tree but a very thick, old and wise nonwoody "herb".

"El drago y el chicharro" parece más un título para un cuento que otra cosa. Este es uno de esos rinconcitos encantadores de Santa Cruz, más aún desde que se han hecho peatonales todas las calles alrededor. Sin embargo, a pesar de todos sus rincones, a Santa Cruz cada vez se la aguanta menos. Ahora sí, cuando esté a miles de kilómetros de distancia la echaré de menos como si fuera la ciudad más maravillosa del mundo. Irónico.

Stupot

Para los que no hayan visto muchos blogs y no sepan hasta donde la gente llega con ellos y para los que hayan visto muchos y piensen que todos son más o menos iguales, tengo una recomendación. Es EL blog que me ha inspirado y animado a empezar con el mio. Se llama STUPOT y lo lleva Stuart Kerr, un diseñador escocés que vive en Osaka. Silent library

I remember when studying for my degree, that some of the most hysterical moments of uncontrollable laughter took place... in the library!. I remember those glory days watching this AMAZING clip. Have fun and take it from me, the more you watch it , the funnier it gets.

Señoras y señores, aqui tienen el que para mí, sin ninguna sombra de dudas y hasta el fin de los tiempos será el video más divertido que yo haya visto nunca. Y lo más increible de todo es que cuanto más lo veo más me meo (¡pareado!!!!)

Noa y Hugo

Esto sale un poco tarde, pero es que he tenido una semanita... que ya te digo. El caso es que el fin de semana pasado tuvo lugar el inolvidable bautizo de Noa y Hugo, los hijos de mi mejor amigo, Jaime y la maravillosa Dácil. Como les contaba el otro día yo soy uno de los padrinos de la bella Noa, de apenas cuatro meses de edad. La ceremonia, la comida, lod dos días que pasamos en "El Buen Retiro" de Güimar y la buena vibra de todo el mundo hizo la experiencia absolutamente inolvidable. La verdad es que nunca pensé que ser padríno fuese algo que hiciese tanta ilusión. Si bien es cierto que la magia e ilusión que le echen los padres influye mucho. Pues eso, familia, que sean muy felices, que los niños les traigan felicidad y que el amor que disfrute la parejita se multipique con el que le brindemos los padrinos. Y por cierto, gracias por este regalo.

Remember i said a few weeks ago i was going to act as godfather of lovely Noa? Well it happened last weekend and it turned out to be the most exciting and moving experience in a long time (worth becoming the kickstart of this blog). Not only the ceremony and the party were quite enjoyable, but there was also a wee space the next day in which all godparents (three in the case of Noa) could spend some quality time with the children and kind of reassure ourselves of the extraordinary bond we are creating with the kids. It was magic. Princess Noa entered the weekend with a nasty cold and some horrible cough. But after two days of good vibes, fresh countryside air and the healing powers of the 300+ year old Dragon tree of the garden, she went back home on Sunday night healthy and lively as a rose.

Vendedores - Street vendors

El otro día vi desde la ventana del trabajo, en la Rambla de Pulido en Santa Cruz, una señora vendiendo plantas como se ve en la foto. Me recordó las historias que he oido de las lecheras de Anaga y Las Mercedes que bajaban caminando con sus cántaros en la cabeza hasta La La Laguna para venderla allí. Me encanta ver que aún queda gente vendiendo así, poniendo una nota de color a las calles de Santa Cruz. Enseguida bajé, le compré un photo por 5€ y le pedí que me dejara sacarle una foto.

One of the very few traditional street vendors you can still find in the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. These people are so nice and easy to talk to. Only 20 years ago there were many of them all around the islands. Now you can only find them in rural areas or small towns, and very rarely, as in this case, in the capital. One of the all time classics that still survive in Santa Cruz is the "knife sharpener" mounted on his motorcycle and blowing his endearing harmonica. If i get a glimpse of the man, i'll take a picture and post it here.

Hola,

Quiero compartir con ustedes un lugar de internet muy especial para mi en los últimos meses. Se llama FRAGMENT MUSIC y es el lugar de un sello discográfico ruso que distribuye el material de sus artistas de forma gratuita. La música es electrónica minimalista. No puedo definir lo que eso significa, sólo les puedo animar a que la escuchen. Mi experiencia es que desde que escuché un tema de uno de los artistas del sello en Radio 3, los 11 álbumes que me he descargado del sitio me han acompañado dentro del reproductor MP3 a todas horas y en todo tipo de situaciones. Últimamente voy en guagua, trabajo, monto en bici, paseo por la calle y hasta me voy a dormir con FRAGMENT, se ha convertido en la banda sonora de mi vida.

I want to share with you the last wierd addiction i have just given in to recently. It's called FRAGMENT MUSIC and its a Russian label of minimal techno music that shares all its albums online. You can download the albums for free in MP3 format. I, particularly, can do almost anything to FRAGMENT MUSIC, from riding my bike to go quietly to sleep. I think is, put simply, amazing music, even though a few years ago, minimal music was definetely not my thing.

You'll see that the style of every artist is different, but when put together, the music of the label blends beautifully into an exciting urban-futuristic-cool kind of experience.

Hope you like it and enjoy it as much as i do. Feedback welcomed.

Hi everyone,

after almost 2 months, i've finally decided to start posting in my BRAND NEW BLOG. And... what news could be better for a first posting that my becoming a godfather for the enchanting beauty you can see on the left! Isn't she a princess?! Her name is Noa, which means "motion", "wanderer", "comfort" or "peace" depending on the source. So let's say she'll be a Peaceful Wanderer on this World in Motion of ours, always willing to bring us Comfort. Her Mum and Dad are certainly very lucky! And so is her brother Hugo.

como ven he empezado el BLOG un poco tarde para lo que tenía planeado, pero creo que en cierto modo estaba esperando una buena excusa... que acaba de llegar: voy a ser padrino de la belleza que veis al lado, hija de Jaime y Dácil y de nombre NOA!!! El nombre proviene del hebreo y significa "movimiento", "paz", "trotamundos" o "consuelo", según la fuente. Son cuatro palabras con las que me identifico muchísimo, así que seguro que tenemos y tendremos mucho en común. El día 10 de este mes se bautizan ella y su increíble hermano Hugo. Allís estaremos. Y por cierto, muchísimas felicidades para sus otros padrinos, Bilma y Pascual. ¡Qué suerte tenemos, eh?!

Ésta es la primera entrada en mi primer blog, el que con suerte verá mis últimos meses en España y mis primeros en el País del Sol Naciente.

Y como sé que va a ser un poco duro eso de irse solo a un lugar y empezar desde matacero, pues se me ha ocurrido que puede ser interesante que nos comuniquemos con este super-inventazo que son los blogs. Así yo tendré a quien contarle las historietas más surrealistas de la semana y ustedes podrán enterarse de lo surrealista que puede ser mi vida .... o de lo aburridísima que a veces resulta.

Y luego, claro, si quieren me escriben un comentario, que se publicará y todo eso y los podremos leer todos y descojonarnos un rato.

Si les he de decir la verdad, yo sigo sin saber cómo funciona Blogger, que es la herramienta (www.blogger.com) que he usado para crear esta especie de diario que dejas abierto en la mesa de la sala ;-) (la verdad es que esto lo puede leer cualquiera, ¿que flipe no?).

Así que iré descubriendo los secretillos de Blogger sobre la marcha. Así que no se asusten si de vez en cuando el blog cambia de color, de tipo de letra o de lo que sea.

En fin, que bienvenidos por haber venido y gracias por concursar.

Helooooooooooo! to everyone out there!!!!

You might be thinking, "where the hell has this lad been for the last two years?" And the answer is "well, back at home". But this is about to change, since i've had enough of the Atlantic and i intend to head for the Pacific (or the Sea of Japan, we'll see) very soon.

Yes, I intend to move to Japan, AT LAST!!!! And that's the reason why i'm starting this blog today, so you can stay posted about my most bizarre moments before and after the move. I have located a few very interesting blogs about Europeans that have moved to the Land of the Rising Sun, and i follow them quite eagerly. So i thought that you might also find amusing to read about my adventures in planning, imagining and later actually checking out the facts of REAL JAPAN.

Well, i hope you guys come here often and i promise i will make any efforts necessary to not make this blog the most boring thing since the Teletubbies.

By the way, i'm not translating the Spanish entry here. So if you can read Spanish (all invited to learn a lovely language), you have twice the amount of homework, :-P
