Nieve en Tenerife - Snow in Tenerife

Last weekend we had a intense storm sweeping the Canaries after one of the driest wet season i can remember. For 3 days it poured and poured, and strong winds could be felt almost anywhere in the islands. We reached Orange Alarm (don't know what that really means, but the media advised not to use cars or leave home). After a few days of road closure at the National Park of El Teide, today we could finally access the area. It was.... mindblowing! The whole mountain is covered in snow and a large part of the area around El Portillo is completely covered too. The central atrium and the lower areas of the Cañadas (a big wall surronding Teide) are not painted in white already, but their tops remain beautifully white: Guajara looked gorgeous. Hope you like the photos. Also watch two videos, one from the foot of Izaña and the other one shot as we drive.

Peace Boat

(if you can't read Spanish, soon you'll find the English version in Comments)

Unlike its previous biggest video hit "Call on me", with its over-the-top explicitness but definetely an eye-catcher, the new Eric Prydz's video deals with important issues. The story is a kind of Besson's "Yamasaki" meets Greenpeace activists, and the moral is quite easy to understand. Here you have:

Viaje a El Hierro - Trip to El Hierro

This is a post about a trip our family made to the isle of El Hierro. I'm posting late, but i've been also moving out of my old flat, getting things sorted and so on and time available for sitting on the computer desk has been little. So,... this trip was amazing. We stayed in a beautiful rural house in El Mocanal with all the commodities you could think of, and we travelled around to see some of the countless beautiful spots this charming piece of land has to offer.

The most remarkable thing about the most westerly and southerly point of Europe is... quietness. Oh yes! There's no pollution, no traffic hassle and no people rushing in the streets. The place is really quiet, so much that it takes a while to get used to it if you come from a city (even a small one as Santa Cruz). It's also quite small, only 107 sq. miles. But the richness of it's cultural and natural heritages is tremendous. If you ever go there, you should never miss the mindblowing landscape of El Golfo cliffs, the remarkable and endangered, 2-feet-long, Giant Lizzard of el Hierro (bred in captivity) and the amazing diving spots and lovely fish restaurants of La Restinga. But that's only the beginning; there are dozens of hidden gems in the island (viewpoints, footpaths, old houses, churches, and so on) that are definetely worth visiting.

We had excellent weather in our 3-day visit and we could enjoyed a fenomenal barbacue, went hiking and managed to see the most beautiful sunset from el Mirador de la Peña, a breathtaking viewpoint located at 3000 ft above the huge valle of El Golfo. Mum and Dad loved the place as did my sisters' friend David, from Scotland.

Here you have some pictures of the trip:

Ethical Banking - Banca etica

Recently it's been two months since i become a customer at Triodos Bank in Spain. This is the most remarkable example of Ethical Banking in Spain and the rest of Europe (UK has also the Co-operative Bank). The idea behind ethical banking is simple. Banks make money by means of investing our money in other organisations or companies. An ethical bank is one that thinks twice before investing in a company and refuses to back those whose practices and ethical code are not consistent with: human rights, children rights, international peace agreements, environmental treaties and so on. Basically, you and your bank will be making money by investing in projects and companies that think a bit beyond mere profit and care a bit about other values (or at least, what costumers have to say about those values).

In these two months i have only words of praise for the company and its staff. I use both online and telephone banking and every agent i have spoken to has been extremely efficient and polite. No telephone queues, no difficult option menus, and a reasonable number of security checks for performing operations that makes you feel safe when operating on the phone. Summing up, an excellent idea with an excellent service to match.

I'm not only trying here to sell you Triodos Bank and attract new clients. Moreover, i intend to let you know that there are alternatives in banking as there are in supermarkets, clothing and cosmetics. There are some people out there trying to make business whilst considering profit only as one of their goals, and trying to make some space for a better world.

Me pica el pie #2

If there's anything I love to have near where i live is a local market. Actually, any market is a perfect excuse for a wee stroll after waking up, so i can get some fresh food for breakfast. I can't think of a better quickstart for a good day. I'm lucky that La Laguna has this amazing market with the freshest fruit and vegetables you can imagine, and the privilege of a 3-times-a-week local farmers market and a twice-a-week fully organic local market. What a feast!

Santa Cruz has also its fair share of good markets, among which is a Sunday Market out in the streets, absolutely perfect for finding cheap clothes, having a nice ice cream and meeting loads of people of countless nationalities.

Feliz 2007 - Happy 2007

Natalie-chan

(para español, ve a Comments)

Hi, Happy Christmas to all Christians out there!! Hope you had a lovely evening and your Christmas Day is nice and peaceful.

The last weeks have been really busy, but in a good sense. People visiting for holidays, dinner parties, etc. I haven't posted anything about it, but in the coming days i'll be updating the blog little by little, so i dont' miss anything important.

The most important visit has been that of Natalie, my dearest friend from Scotland and elder sister, and her boyfriend, Gary, who came for a 1-week sunny break to Tenerife. It had been a long time without catching up, so it was amazing to spend time together and also have the chance to show them around the island. We hiked through the Anaga forests, visited the Teide National Park, strolled along the beautiful walkways of La Laguna, ate gorgeous local fish by the sea shore and so on. We had a great time.

Me pica el pie #1

(If you don't read Spanish, see an English version of the entry, posted as the first comment)

They say that Loro Parque is the "must" of Tenerife, and although i hate to see animals living in captivity, i have to admit the Park is really a must. There are really few negative things to say about it, besides the annoying huge crowds that gather on holidays (such as yesterday) and weekends (i guess). Apart from that, the place is amazing, both for kids and grown-ups. The animal shows are so entertaining and well staged, Planet Penguin is just amazing and the gardens covering the whole open areas are so beautiful. All in all, a place worth visiting; the question i keep asking myself is "should places like this exist at all?". Tough one.

Dragon & Mackerel - Drago y Chicharro

I have to admit i'm not a great fan of my home city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There are a few things about it, that, well.. one day i'll talk about it. But one thing is undeniable: it's got some really beautiful hidden spots. And many of them come out mostly at night. This is one of them. The tree in the back is the dragon tree i mentioned in a previous post. A magnificent species, original of this part of the world, that actually is not a tree but a very thick, old and wise nonwoody "herb".

Besos

Maybe you read a previous post here saying i decided to start this blog thanks of some interesting blogs i was reading myself. I mostly read blogs of foreigners that live in Japan for obvious reasons: I'm going there. But ocasionally i also read other blogs of random topics.

None of the blogs i've visited remotely compares to STUPOT. Created by Stuart Kerr, a Scottish designer based in Osaka, the blog and the website that contains it is pure eye pleasure. And the best of all: it's the only blog i've seen in which a gaijin ("foreigner") really looks at Japan with real respect and interest, while giving unbiased insight into the real Japan. There's no nasty jokes about Japanese wierdness, no moaning about how different things are over there. You can see the guy is really enjoying his time there and wants us to have a taste of what he's immersed in and share his creativity.

I really recommend you go and check out Stuart's work, words and images. And Stu, thanks for the style and keep it coming, please.

Silent library

I remember when studying for my degree, that some of the most hysterical moments of uncontrollable laughter took place... in the library!. I remember those glory days watching this AMAZING clip. Have fun and take it from me, the more you watch it , the funnier it gets.

Remember i said a few weeks ago i was going to act as godfather of lovely Noa? Well it happened last weekend and it turned out to be the most exciting and moving experience in a long time (worth becoming the kickstart of this blog). Not only the ceremony and the party were quite enjoyable, but there was also a wee space the next day in which all godparents (three in the case of Noa) could spend some quality time with the children and kind of reassure ourselves of the extraordinary bond we are creating with the kids. It was magic. Princess Noa entered the weekend with a nasty cold and some horrible cough. But after two days of good vibes, fresh countryside air and the healing powers of the 300+ year old Dragon tree of the garden, she went back home on Sunday night healthy and lively as a rose.

Vendedores - Street vendors

One of the very few traditional street vendors you can still find in the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. These people are so nice and easy to talk to. Only 20 years ago there were many of them all around the islands. Now you can only find them in rural areas or small towns, and very rarely, as in this case, in the capital. One of the all time classics that still survive in Santa Cruz is the "knife sharpener" mounted on his motorcycle and blowing his endearing harmonica. If i get a glimpse of the man, i'll take a picture and post it here.

Fragment

Hola,

Besos

Hi dudes,

I want to share with you the last wierd addiction i have just given in to recently. It's called FRAGMENT MUSIC and its a Russian label of minimal techno music that shares all its albums online. You can download the albums for free in MP3 format. I, particularly, can do almost anything to FRAGMENT MUSIC, from riding my bike to go quietly to sleep. I think is, put simply, amazing music, even though a few years ago, minimal music was definetely not my thing.

You'll see that the style of every artist is different, but when put together, the music of the label blends beautifully into an exciting urban-futuristic-cool kind of experience.

Hope you like it and enjoy it as much as i do. Feedback welcomed.

Love

Eduardo, the godfather ;-) Voy a ser padrino

Hi everyone,

after almost 2 months, i've finally decided to start posting in my BRAND NEW BLOG. And... what news could be better for a first posting that my becoming a godfather for the enchanting beauty you can see on the left! Isn't she a princess?! Her name is Noa, which means "motion", "wanderer", "comfort" or "peace" depending on the source. So let's say she'll be a Peaceful Wanderer on this World in Motion of ours, always willing to bring us Comfort. Her Mum and Dad are certainly very lucky! And so is her brother Hugo.
